THE INCREDIBLE COCKROACH |
|
| |
The Incredible Cockroach
Germans have never invaded America, but the German cockroaches did. Of the five basic types of cockroaches that are known in US, the German cockroach is the most persistent insect. The others are the American cockroach, Smokeybrown cockroach, Oriental cockroach and the Brownbanded cockroach.
The American cockroach is the largest of the five. It has a yellow band across its head. The Smokeybrown is smaller than American. It is brown or Mahoney in color. The Oriental is approximately the same size as the Smokeybrown. But it is dark brown or black. The American, the Smokeybrown and the Oriental are the larger cockroaches ranging from one to one and a half inch.
The Brownbanded and the German cockroaches are the smaller ones measuring between ˝ to 5/8 inch.
The German cocokroach is a kitchen menace in US. It gains access into homes when boxes, purses, clothing, used furniture are brought in. Once settled, the cockroach breeds prolific. The female carries its egg capsule that contains as many as 40 young ones. It releases the egg capsule only when the young ones are ready to emerge. This is a sure mechanism to see that the egg capsule hatches under maternal custody. Other cockroaches leave their egg cases that are prone to be eaten by predators or destroyed by other means.
The young ones called the nymphs are half the size of the adults and they quickly molt and grow stealing and eating food on the kitchen floors. The German cockroach is more confined to homes while the American cockroach prefers to live outside when it is not in search of food or safe shelters.
Cockroaches eat anything, book -bindings, paper, foods of all kinds and even human flesh. They have been identified as common cause of asthma. Inhalation of feces and body fragments particularly among inner city children has resulted in an explosion of asthma cases in the past twenty years. Cockroaches are also carriers of some harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.
Cockroaches can live without food for a month, can hold breath for 45 minutes, slow down heart rate and can withstand radiation better than humans. It is said that if there were to be a nuclear holocaust, cockroach could be the only survivor on this planet. The cockroach has a long history dating back to the cretaceous period. It has lived with the Dinosaurs and escaped major cataclysms on earth.
The common name “Cockroach” shares sounds with the Dutch “Kakkerlak” and Spanish “Cucaracha” but the origin of the name is still ambiguous. Cockroach indeed is incredible. The Lobsters are also called "Cockroaches of the
sea". But they do not cause asthma!
