Good, Bad and Ugly Insects

Insects are the most successful group of animals. They are so abundant on earth that they exceed all other animal groups combined. There are more than a million species of insects that are good, bad and ugly.

Man’s existence in the insect world is dependent on two important interactions. Insects benefit man by producing or by serving as food. These are the good insects. By acting as pests of a human resource, insects cause harm to man. They are the bad and the ugly ones. The lists of these insect types are endless.

The good insects that are directly beneficial to man are those that produce honey, wax, silk etc. Some are indirectly useful. They pollinate our crops; they are natural enemies of pests and excellent scavengers. Without the insect pollinators there would be no fruits, nuts or vegetables.

The bad insects are the pests. They consume 10 to 15% of all crops in the world each year. The damage does not seem to stop there. After a crop is harvested a wide range of insects attack stored products.

Human dwellings made of wood are prone to the attack by termites. The termites consume millions of dollars worth of wooden material each year.

The ugly insects are those that cause or spread diseases. The mosquito is a menacing insect responsible for the spread of malaria and it is the major insect enemy of the World Health Organization.

If you have a garden and grow certain plants you will be in the midst of some very good insects. They not only protect your interests, but also keep the bad insects under check. There is a big list of garden plants that provide rich nectar and colorful blossoms. Angelica, bee balm, buckwheat, Calendula, Candytuft, Caenothus, Chervil, Cilantro, Clover, Daisy, Dill, Erigeron, Evening primrose, Funnel goldenrod, Gypsophila, Lovage, Parsley, Queen Anne‘s lace, Rue, Snowberry, Sunflower, Sweet alyssum, Sweet cicely, Thyme, Valerian and Yarrow are some of the plants that gardeners recommend for attracting good insects into your backyard.

A casual observation will reveal some of your best insect friends. The Ladybird beetle feeds on aphids that attack common plants. The Lady Bird is also fond of scale insects and mites. The Preying Mantis feeds on a variety of insects that are harmful to man. Ambush bugs feed on small insects that may enter our houses. The larvae of common lacewings are direct enemies of small annoying caterpillars. The Antlions prefer ants. The lowly ground beetle found under logs and debris ensures that the area is free from small insects by feeding on them.

Good insects are the three great” P”s. They are the Predators, Parasites and Pollinators. The rest are either bad or ugly.
