6. Night Glows

Fireflies are a treat to watch during nights. They are equipped with special light organs that produce flashes of light. The light flashes are used to identify the mates and also ward off predators. The firefly light is a “cold light”. It is produced by special cells called photocytes. In these cells there is a substance called Luciferin which in combination with Oxygen in the presence of an enzyme, Luciferase produces a flash of light. This chemical reaction is described as “chemoluminiscence”.

7. Giraffe Weevil

Weevils are beetles and are the largest family in the entire animal kingdom. The Giraffe weevil with its long peculiar snout grows to a length of 3 inches. It occurs in the islands of Madagascar (eastern coast of Africa). The Giraffe weevil lives in warm climates and is one of the strangest looking insects in the world.

8. House Flies

Houseflies are the most harmful insects to man, because they can carry and spread diseases. Their feeding and breeding habits are associated with human dwellings and the places where man’s pets live. The houseflies are adept at moving from the decaying garbage or fecal matter straight to the dinner table. In the process they carry bacteria, parasitic eggs, and other harmful chemicals. They regurgitate saliva and contaminate our food. By comparison, the cockroach is clean and sanitary.

9. Insect Venom

Insects can cause severe allergic skin reactions in man. The insect venom may result in life threatening anaphylactic reaction in the insect venom sensitive people ( an estimated 13 million people are venom sensitive in US alone). Fire ant is known to cause even death. In US it is the leading cause of insect stings.

10. Age of Insects

Insects have been able to adapt and survive through millions of years (all the orders of Insects with one exception are represented in the Triassic age, 225 million years ago) because of their flight, small size, external skeleton, specialized reproduction and metamorphosis in accordance with weather conditions. No other animal group has this distinction.
